Purifying Morning blissful Tulsi (Holy Basil) tea.
Spread the taste

The first sip of the day has so much power in my opinion, to wake you up and to stir in fresh thoughts. I am not a coffee person, and struggled to find the perfect warm beverage to invigorate my mornings, until I tried this combination. Now, it is a part of my morning routine.

Tulsi- Holy basil, very much known to have medicinal properties, used in Ayurveda, along with a touch of mint, heat of black pepper, sweetness of honey, freshness of lime, and the earthy ginger- all blend into turmeric, to create morning magic.

Tulsi- a herb for all uses – scientifically proven- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4296439/

Equipment

  • Hot water kettle/ tea maker – optional

Ingredients

  • 1 liter water
  • 12 leaves tulsi
  • 6 leaves mint
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1 Tbsp ginger grated or finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp lemon/lime juice
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tsp Honey or can use 1 dry date chopped organic- optional , can skip if worried about blood glucose

Instructions

  • Fill the kettle with water. If you are using electric kettle with in built mesh strainer, add the green leaves, ginger, pepper powder, turmeric , finely chopped dry date or little bit of date powder to the strainer, dip it into the water. Turn the kettle on and let it finish it's cycle.
  • If you chose to do this over stove top, just take a deep small pan, add the water, leaves, ginger, turmeric, black pepper, chopped dry date (if using) and let it boil on medium heat for 5-6 min
  • Once your tea is hot and steeped with wonderful flavors that you will enjoy in a minute, open the kettle, take the strainer off, add lemon juice and honey (if adding). Swirl the kettle to mix and let it sit for 5 min.
In case you boiled your water on stove top, strain now in to a tumbler and then add honey, lemon juice. Mix with a spoon.
  • Serve hot with morning to do list 🙂
  • I make one litre of this tea in the morning, so that every one in the family can drink some and the rest , can be nicely poured into a thermos/travel mug to carry with you during the day.

Notes

If it feels a bit spicy, lessen the black pepper and increase  the honey. Again, this is the taste profile, my family is already used to and will need little customization to your palate.
If you don’t have Tulsi leaves, you can just make it with plain mint leaves, or even add bit of cilantro.
I grow my own Tulsi and have the luxury to use them for most part of the year.
You can add additional black tea leaves while making your tea or steep a tea bag of your choice in your cup in to this tulsi tea. But I prefer it all by itself , and can drink it all day, if possible. Seriously 🙂
